It's been a great weekend so far, spent most of yesterday pottering about in the garden and we really seem to be getting somewhere. Janey started by planting out some of the seedlings she's been cultivating in the front room while I cut the grass.
It was at that point that I finally decided we needed a spring rake to give the grass a real good thrashing, so off we pootled. Picked up a few new plants for the garden, mostly herbs and stuff, but also got a lavender-lookalike to entice the bees to come visit. The bees at Wyvale seemed to like this plant, so much so that Janey had to wrestle the plant away from the clutches of the bumble bees.
We also picked up a cheap bird feeder which we hope they'll like, though I imagine that I'll end up having to make a far more robust version in the near future as the squirrel is bound to have a go at it. Not that we mind, as the whole point of it was to get some nice photos out of the landing window. We don't care if the photos are of birds or squirrels.
Back home and with new rake in hand we gave the grass the aforementioned thrashing, and got back into planting out the seedlings. Well, Janey did anyway, I was too busy taking photos of the bumble bees that were ambushing the lavender-lookalike. :-)
One thing I've discovered is that bees are a real pain to photograph. Dogs and cats can be easily convinced to stand still for the second or two you need to take the shot. Even ducks and geese are inquisitive enough to glare a you for a econd or two. Bees on the other hand are a law unto themselves. Even my calming words of "Come on mister bumble bee, there's some nice pollen over here." didn't have any effect on them. I mean, a split second is all I needed but they were far too busy working to take the blindest bit of notice. Oh well, I rattled of a few shots anyway, so hopefully something will come out.
Not put off though I hatched a plan to get the little blighters next time. I have a small matchbox size video camera that I'm thinking of building into a waterproof box and mounting in the garden somewhere. I'm sure I could hide the cables somewhere and track them back to my video setup. Bill Oddie and Kate Humble would be proud of me. :-)
I have no idea if I'll actually build the 'gardencam' and to be honest it doesn't really matter, most of the fun is in the plotting anyway. You never know though, I may just give it a go.

Paul & Janey
I was just thinking to myself, as you do, I wonder what Paul & Jane are doing , and there you go ,as if by magic a blog appears. Sounds good fun. Just like to say to you both a big thanks for sorting Johnathan & Caroline's PC. They were in church today, and were ever so pleased that you managed to fix it for them. Catch up soon JOHN W.
Paul & Janey
Well, I thought it was about time I did a blog entry as it's been a while since my last one. The problem is all I really have to talk about is computers and techie stuff so I find myself sitting down, typing a blog, then deleting it as I don't want to bore you all to tears.
Yes, the gardening was good fun, though to be honest my contribution is mainly confined to digging and such, I leave all the complicated stuff to Janey. I won't go into too much detail here as I feel another blog entry coming.
Bird Feeders
Paul's blog has just reminded me of the Springwatch programme for children on CBeebies. They made a bird feeder with a pine cone. They rolled it in a mixture of fat and seeds, let it harden and hung it on a tree. I thought what a great bird feeder - very cheap (excuse the pun) - think we might make one too.
Bird feeders
Now what a fantastic idea, dead simple and green too. May have to wander over Stockley Park to pick up a few pine cones.
lavender & insects
Paul's comments about bumble-bees reminded me of trying to photograph some gorgeous but very flittish butterflies that were obsessed by my sister-in-laws huge lavender bushes in France. Spent ages at it & can't now remember if I got any decent ones. Must trail thru' archives & check....
PS - does anyone want any Alicante tomato plants, or some brussels sprouts - have got more potted up than we have room for and I really hate composting healthy plants!!!
Sprouts and tomatoes

I'd have volunteered to take some of the sprouts off you but we only have a little patch of garden
Shame I love sprouts!
You could always donate them to the plant stall at the Festival - looks like there will be one at the garden party on Saturday 21st
sprouts and stingers- yum!
I love sprouts- I'll buy some on 21st if I've got round to de-bindweeding the veg patch by then.
Our fig tree has produced lots of baby fig trees- If anyone wants to try their luck digging one up, do come and have a go. I've got no idea when the right time of year to do it would be, so if you get round to looking it up let me know.
Plenty of self-seeded trees of all sizes and species (esp. oak, chestnut & holly) also available. We ate some of the stinging nettles this year !!! but they still compete with the bindweed for the fastest takeover of the garden prize and have got all tough and nasty now.
