Green Group

Green Group visit Grundon's Recycling Plant
This recently formed small group meets on the second Saturday of each month and is made up of members of St John's congregation.

Our aim

The aim of this group is to focus on how we can best be good tenants and stewards of God's earth in order to help conserve the world's resources.

In line with the Bishop of London's recent eco initiative, (supported by the Mayor of London), St John's, along with all other churches of the London Diocese, is charged with running a greener church. St John's Green Group just happened to get started early!

Our message

Our message is simple - Reduce, Re-use and Recycle as much and as often as we can, at church, at home and at work. This message will be used as widely as possible both inside and outside our church. As a start, we now have a GREEN SPOT inside church which acts as a recycling collection & Information point. Also there are resource books and magazine articles related to Green issues, notes from Green Group meetings and a framed Green Notice Board.

Our strategy

In order to discover how green we are at church, we have signed up to a national initiative called Eco-congregation and undertook an audit of our current level of ‘green-ness'. The results were that St John's is already fairly green but we have identified several areas for further action including the investigation of ways to conserve energy and generate our own power

We have been using eco friendly cleaning products around the church for some time and are a designated Traidcraft retailer, using their tea, coffee and other products for church refreshments.

The clergy are planning a regular series of services focussed on conserving the world's resources and eco related issues, and will be working closely with the GREEN GROUP. We are also looking for ways in which we can work together with local businesses and charitable organisations on
Green issues

The GREEN GROUP will continue to look at new ways to ensure we run a greener church.

In the Green Spot at the back of church there are various boxes for recycling things that won't go in your weekly collection. These items include

  • Old spectacles
  • Used batteries
  • Used stamps
  • Mobile phones
  • Printer cartridges
