I found this and thought it was worth sharing...

http://green.search.goo.ne.jp/index_en

It's an Internet search engine much like Google but it donates 15% of it's profits to an organisation called KEEP

"The Kiyosato Educational Experiment Project (KEEP) is an economic and community development project rooted in Christian faith. KEEP was founded on four ideals: Food, Health, Faith, and Hope for Youth. In the last several decades, KEEP has grown to include the additional principles of environmental education and advocacy work, and international outreach. But the mission has remained constant: to offer program participants and visitors alike a new perspective, a stronger spirituality, a deeper cultural understanding, a richer appreciation for the ties that bind all people, and an opportunity to learn valuable agricultural, environmental, and community building skills."

I've played with the search a bit and it seems really good - I'd be interested to know how other people find it. I'll add it to the links section later on.

Thanks Janey

I put in 'church hillingdon' and we came up No. 5 behind the usual suspects! Going to give it a whirl and see how it goes. I always feel insecure about changes like this though! I'm not likely to get deluged in spam or viruses or anything am I?

The whole search-the-internet business is such a mind-blowing mystery to me... I'm such a scaredy-cat!! Reassurance please!

Technophobia

OK firstly if you have a decent firewall and anti-virus package that is updated regularly and performs regular scans (I recommend daily) you should be OK whatever you're doing on the net. Oh and if you don't already have it installed steer clear of Norton because it can be nasty (I tried to uninstall it on a PC once and had to flatten the whole hard drive and reinstall fron scratch) and it costs money... there is a fabby free AV package that we use called AVG it's nice and easy to use and just as effective as the paid for stuff. For a firewall I'd recommend Zone Alarm - also free and effective. We use both on all our PCs. I pay for AV software on the Mac because they're only written for PC but it's not very expensive - People don't tend to write viruses for Macs but there are the odd nasties out there and there's nothing wrong with a little healthy paranoia!

Secondly just by using the Internet you can't get spam - you just need to be careful where you give out your email address. I have a spare email account that I use if I need to sign up for anything that I'm not sure about - once it starts getting too much spam I'll kill it and set up another one. That said I have an excellent spam filter on my mail client which catches most of the spam and hides it away in a folder - I check the folder when it fills up and then do a "select all" "delete" and it goes away.

If you want a free mail client that does the same sort of thing then have a look at Mozilla Thunderbird. If it looks too scary I'm sure we can come and set it up for you.

Thirdly.... do you really think I would have recommended it if it was dodgy? 8>
