Swappsies and Sharing!!
OfflineAges and ages ago it seems (time always seems to disappear) we explored and talked about swapping skills and sharing our skills. I am afraid I can not remember the whole bible reference though I think it was something on the early church and how they operated.
Well I got thinking this morning when feeling particularly jolly and finding myself singing. What I was thinking about was all the Jobs and stuff that needs to be done in the house that I am not all that good at. Then I remembered the whole thing about swapping and sharing etc. Then further inspired I thought the Website might be a good location for that to happen. I know we tried a bit at the back of church but it didn't really take off. I wondered if it might work on the Web site.
What do you think?

I could do with finding some one who is able to replace radiators and happy to help change my bedroom radiator as it has rusted and is now leaking on the carpet. I know the theory of changing it. i have a DIY book but am a little worried that it will all go wrong and I will flood my flat.
Secondly the beater bar on my vacuum cleaner has broken. I wondered if any one knew how to fix it or had a vacuum they no longer want. Its really annoying as the vacuum is not that old but out of warranty, I haven't tried Panasonic, that might be an option if no joy.
The other aspect is what can I give. That I found more tricky, I can do lots of things but I am no real officianado at any one thing. I can cook a good carrot cake, iron, babysit, take kids out for a day (Have CRB for work and junior church) I can clean, make craft items, type and use a computer. I could probably do other stuff if any one wants to negotiate a swappsy

Sounds like a great idea, though I am a tad dubious whether we can reach more people on St John's Online than was managed at the back of church, especially considering that since this gereration of the site is quite new, we only have a dozen people who post on a regular basis.
Let us think about it at this end, and we'll see if we can work something out. We're currently working on a few new features which will be rolled out soon, but we'll certainly bung it on the list.
the green group are about to launch a swapping/selling/sharing system which when its underway we would love to feature on the website. we just need to get ourselves organised and find time to get it up and running - if any one would be interested in helping with the admin of it - all offers welcome.

It might be an idea to tell people what's involved with the admin if you want someone to volunteer - and tell us a bit about how you expect it to work on a general level so we can think about the website end of things.
We were approached privately about this a few months ago and we decided that the timing wasn't right because we didn't want to take away the focus from the eBay sales in the run up to the Festival.
Whilst it sounds like a great idea on the face of things I have a few reservations -
Paul and I are happy to work on giving it a place on the website but only if we think it will get used. At the moment we only have a small hardcore of members who participate on a regular basis - I wonder how much point there is to putting it on the site when a lot of people don't want to use what is here already?
If there is admin involved that is extra to the general running of the website someone else will have to look after that end of things.
We'll have to know exacty how the whole project will be run and where you see the website fitting in.
If you come back to us when the project is up and running we'll see what we can do - sorry if this is sounding a bit negative but if we're going to do this we need to be able to do it properly.

Sorry guys I did not mean to tread on toes here. When I typed my thoughts about sharing and swapping. I really did not intend it to mean more work for anyone. I was thinking largley of it as an informal agreement if some one happened to see what I had put and wanted to share/ swop with any swappying sharing being negotiated informally between the persons concerned. I know people leave busy and hectic lives believe you me I know that well enough. I was not thinking of it as a set feature on the site either. Sorry for causing people anticipatory stress.
