St John's seven 'Commissioned Ministers' were re-commissioned on Wednesday 21st Jan at a special service in Southall. The process of 'commissioning' links these seven into a support structure within the wider family the 'Willesden Area' churches which enables them meet people who do similar things in other churches.
The introduction of 'Commissioned Ministers' at the end of last century, was a key step in spreading out the spiritual ministry of the clergy among all the members of a church. Over the past ten years it has become normal, at St John's, for a wide variety of people to play a part in leading our worship and outreach, and that sharing now includes many more people than our seven 'commissioned ministers'. However the re-commissioning event provides us with a good opportunity to thank God for those seven who, in many ways, have beaten the path which many others are now able to down.
As Jesus demonstrated in his own life, the work of God should not be the exclusive possession of priests, rabbis and experts. All people who love God are invited to join in his work. This is very important within the life of St John's
The seven are: Brenda Thomas, Jane Upchurch, Katharine Harrison, Caroline Reed, Liz Sands, Carol Williams and Tony Sheffield.

Luke 22:26 ..."but you are not to be like that"
It's a funny business, all this glorification of ministry. I know, it's about affirmation, and that's a good thing. But that's not how it comes across.
Seems a bit random, when we have so many people doing so much at St. John's, for some of us to be receiving certificates from the bishop when others don't.
We here don't seem to fit the Willesden mold very well any more. Still, it's good to stay connected and to be reminded of what else is going on in other places. The Willesden area churches are such a diverse lot. I heard at the Recommissioning how one of the group I was trained with had had her ministry rejected by a new vicar in her parish and not been recommissioned. A lovely lady, with loads to offer.
Personally I wish the accountability/training/etc. structures were more local and more flexible...
Hey, the singing was good though.
