The church building is currently open from 9am to 3pm every Wednesday, with various activities taking place, as well as the opportunity to be alone in the quiet of an ancient church. Refreshments are on offer throughout the day, and there are different opportunities for private engagement and prayer. The recent hour of music and readings has been a great success.
We aim to keep the church open during the daytime on all weekdays, and all day on Sundays. We envisage it being used for a broad variety of activities, including, but not limited to, worship.
All church members, and members of the local community, are welcome to suggest ways that the building can be used, from music events to coffee mornings, activity clubs to meditation sessions.
We plan to follow the successful pattern of the Violet Avenue outreach, encouraging and enabling small groups of individuals to put their ideas into practice. We understand that some things will flourish, others will fade. There is no shortage of ideas for what could be happening in St John's; we will do those things that we have the resources, the personnel and the passion to do well, with an emphasis on simple, sustainable activities.
We are particularly keen to develop fruitful links with the work of the hospital, making use of our close links with the hospital chaplaincy team.
The current furnishing of our church building only allows for a narrow range of activities. We plan to refurnish those parts of the building that are least used, to allow a much wider variety of activities to take place.
