Where?
St John's Church, Hillingdon
When?
Every Thursday in term time between 12 noon and 1pm, (with very occasional exceptions when a funeral or other booking has to take priority. These will be notified on"The Link', our weekly newsletter, and on the website diary.)
What will we be doing?
Breathing, relaxing, being quiet, re-creating… Exploring spiritual truths together at many different levels. Using our whole selves, body, mind and spirit interconnected, to encounter God. Opening our lives more fully to the influence of God's Spirit already at work in us.. Feeling a bit daft together, as we learn not to take ourselves too seriously; whilst taking very seriously the God who loves us.
This is a voyage of exploration – there is no"system' and no right or wrong outcomes. It's an opportunity to receive from God, with no discussion or evaluation required.
Based on the ancient practice of contemplative prayer, with influences from various Christian traditions, especially celtic, ignatian,"lectio divina' and"centering prayer'.
At different times we will use music, images, natural things such as pebbles or water, ancient liturgies and new ideas.

How?
We usually gather quietly at the front of church while music plays; then, at about 12.05pm, join together while some simple active prayer is led. After a few minutes we disperse to use any part of the building. Some sit in the pews, others like to lay on the carpet or kneel in the sanctuary… Then we are led into a silence lasting about 15 minutes. Music signals that it's time for the kettle to go on, but if you don't want to chat at the back you are very welcome to remain where you are.
Why?
‘When you pray, go into your room and close the door' (-Jesus). It requires more discipline than most of us have, to resist the intrusions of TV , phones, and anxious concerns. Going into the secret inner place of our hearts is important.. Coming together, in such an inspiring place at a set time, is sometimes easier than"going it alone' in your home environment.. It's good to set aside the time to reflect and, for a while at least, refuse to let the rat race sweep us along..
Finding peace is in many ways an individual pursuit, but there are habits we can learn together which we can then go away and use alone. Coming together can be an encouragement to us all..
We need to detach from the stresses of life; but, primarily, to enable us to engage more fully and effectively with our lives afterwards.
Do I have to be a Christian?
No – This approach is especially suited for you if you have a sense of spiritual realities beyond yourself but struggle with the traditional, churchy cerebral/intellectual approach to faith. Jesus had very little time for religious institutions, but told people,"the kingdom of God is within you'. He is the centre of all that we do at St John's. But whoever you are, if you want to connect with and nurture your spiritual
life, then this is for you.
Will I be uncomfortable joining in?
The sessions will be led in an informal friendly way and hopefully we will all be able to relax together. You will NOT have to share any thoughts or feelings with anyone, although you can stay and talk afterwards if you want to.
Cushions and floor mats are available, if you're worried about hard pews! Bring a rug, a journal, a pillow… whatever you find helpful.
Will I have to be sociable?
Not unless you want to. There will be refreshments available afterwards, but there is no pressure to do anything; just come and receive.
It is hoped that at some stage a crèche might be provided if there is the need for one, so let us know if this is something you need.
Do I need to be physically able?
No! Some of us are far from fully fit. There will be a choice of seating available and you are free to opt in and out of anything suggested at any time. Although we will sometimes suggest use of different postures and movements, (eg. using our hands, standing, kneeling...) there is no need to be particularly supple at all.. You are invited to join in as much or as little as you want to. It is up to you to be aware of your
own limitations and to find an application that suits you for each suggestion.
Is there a charge for the sessions?
No. But of course any contributions to refreshments, running costs etc. will be welcome. There will be a basket at the back of church for these.

How can I find out more?
You can ask those who come - there is a core of about 5 or 6 regulars who are around at church on Sunday mornings and at various times in the week., so ask someone to point them out to you. Tony Sheffield leads the session on weeks I'm not available.
I'll be very happy to answer any queries or receive your feedback. anytime. Katharine Harrison (01895)461945, katharine.harrison@blueyonder.co.uk
